An API key is a special password that lets one piece of software talk to another. You will probably never need one. They're for computer programmers connecting other software to your site.
If you ever do need this, you'll find it in the Advanced section. It starts closed, so click the word Advanced in the left menu, then click API Keys. Only the owner can open this tab.
If a developer or marketing company asks you for a key:
- Create a key there and give it a name.
- Prefer limited, read-only access when that's offered.
- You can revoke a key anytime, which shuts that door right away.
Never post a key where the public can see it. Treat it like a house key, and only hand it to people you trust.
Why this matters
Most owners never touch this. But if you do, handing out a limited key you can revoke keeps you in control and keeps your site safe.
