What are the 'Google title' and 'Google description' for a page?
When your page shows up on Google, it has two parts. The blue link line at the top is the Google title. The gray text underneath it is the Google description.
Your site writes sensible ones for every page automatically, so nothing is ever blank. But you can edit them if you want.
For your homepage:
- In the left menu, under Your Website, click Homepage.
- Find the search-settings section on that page.
- Edit the Google title and Google description there.
- Press Save.
Two things to keep in mind:
- Keep the Google title under about 60 characters, or Google cuts it off.
- Make the Google description a short pitch, a sentence or two that makes someone want to click you instead of the next business.
Sometimes Google rewrites your title or description on its own. That's normal, and you can't stop it. Google picks whatever it thinks fits the search.
Why this matters
That blue link and gray text are your first impression on Google. A clear title and a tempting description are the difference between someone clicking you or your competitor.
